Cameroon were the first to threaten as Vincent Aboubakar collected a pass inside the box from Henry Bedimo, and he fired a low effort at goal which was well saved by Naby-Moussa Yattara.
However, Volker Finke's side soon took the lead as Benjamin Moukandjo scored straight from a corner, drilling an effort towards the near post that caught Yattara by surprise and he was unable to keep the ball out of the net.
Guinea almost got back into the game as Ibrahima Traore latched onto a through ball from Seydouba Soumah, but his low strike was well saved by the legs of Fabrice Ondoa.
Traore did bring his side level just before the break when he received the ball on the edge of the box, turned his man and drilled an effort beyond Ondoa into the bottom corner.
In the second half, Cameroon should have restored their advantage when Bedimo raced down the flank and lifted a cross into the box for Aboubakar, but he missed his header from close range with only the keeper to beat.
Both sides missed glorious chances to take the lead within minutes of each other as Edgar Salli blasted his strike over the bar from inside the box, while Naby Keita saw his effort saved by Ondoa.
The game looked to be heading for a draw, although Stephane Mbia had the chance to hand Cameroon a late winner as he latched onto Maxim Choupo-Moting's free kick, but failed to divert the ball past Yattara as both teams settled for a point.
