Barnett has impressed at the Bluebirds since his arrival, helping the club to eight points in his five appearances, and Mackay hopes that the centre-back can help the Welsh club to promotion to the Premier League.
The 41-year-old told the club's official website: "Thanks to the support of Chris Hughton and Norwich City, Leon Barnett will be staying with us until the end of the season.
"We are very grateful to Norwich for their help and look forward to Leon continuing his impressive form in a Cardiff City shirt for our remaining games."
Barnett had not featured in a Premier League game for Norwich since December 8.
