Athletic Bilbao win Celta Vigo thriller in Copa del Rey

Athletic Bilbao win 4-2 at Celta Vigo in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie.

Athletic Bilbao have earned a thrilling 4-2 win at Celta Vigo in the first leg of their Copa del Rey last-16 tie.

Mikel San Jose bundled the ball in from close range to put the visitors ahead on five minutes before Celta levelled things up six minutes later when Alex Lopez drilled home from 12 yards.

However, Bilbao made sure that they ended the first half in front as Aritz Aduriz pounced in the area to head past the goalkeeper.

Celta continued to plug away at the start of the second period, and they equalised for the second time on 55 minutes when Charles nodded in after Mikel Balenziaga had directed a poor header back into his own penalty area.

Both teams showed little fear in getting forward during the remaining 30 minutes, though it was the away side who landed the decisive blow with 30 minutes left through Markel Susaeta's composed finish.

It got worse for Celta before the end of the night as David Costas was shown a second yellow card for a deliberate handball before Aduriz made it 4-2 from the penalty spot after Cabral had grappled with him in the box.
