Dieter van Tornhout's late header earns Kilmarnock a shock League Cup final win over Celtic.

Kilmarnock lifted the Scottish League Cup for the first time in their history when Dieter van Tornhout's late goal earned them a 1-0 victory over Celtic.

The Belgian striker sealed victory with an 84th-minute header to end Neil Lennon's side's dreams of a domestic treble.

It was Celtic who started the brightest. Gary Hooper forced a fine save from Killie goalkeeper Cammy Bell when he latched onto a poor backpass from Mahamadou Sissoko.

Anthony Stokes and Scott Brown also came close for the Glasgow giants in the first half, but Kenny Shiels's underdogs had their chances too, with Dean Shiels and Paul Heffernan testing Celtic keeper Fraser Forster.

Man-of-the-match Bell was the busier of the two shot-stoppers throughout, pulling off a string of vital saves to keep the scores level.

However, Killie showed the kind of grit and determination that got them through the entire competition without conceding a goal, and made the trophy theirs when substitute van Tornhout nodded home Chelsea loanee Ben Gordon's cross six minutes from time.

Celtic piled on the pressure in the dying moments, and had a penalty claim turned down at the death when Stokes went down in the area, only to receive a yellow card for diving.

The result put to an end Celtic's unbeaten run of 27 matches, and saw Kilmarnock lift their first silverware since 1997's Scottish FA Cup triumph.
