Italian full-back Emerson Palmieri could be set to make a return to Chelsea from his loan deal with Lyon, as the French club cannot afford his wages.

Emerson Palmieri is set for a return to Chelsea, according to a report.

The full-back is currently playing for Lyon on loan this season, which was a deal that began during the summer transfer window, with Thomas Tuchel deeming him surplus to requirements.

However, with the injury to Ben Chilwell, the Blues have ended up being stretched in the left-back position, which is what led to Kennedy making his return to the club.

According to Sebastien Denis, Palmieri could also be set for a comeback as Lyon cannot afford his salary, as it is too high for their budget, while the Italian himself is not interested in staying.

Instead, the French club are set to look for a lower-cost replacement or focusing on a different loan in order to replace the Chelsea star.

Despite this situation, the 27-year-old has featured regularly for Lyon, making 23 appearances in Ligue 1, while he has also played five times in the Europa League.
