Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho has revealed that John Terry and David Luiz are likely to remain his first-choice pairing in central defence, leaving Gary Cahill sidelined for the time being.
Terry and Luiz have started Chelsea's last three games in all competitions, including their most recent Premier League win, a 3-1 success at Norwich City.
Mourinho has admitted that Cahill's impressive recent displays for England are unlikely to help him force a recall, but is adamant that he trusts the defender to come in and perform when called upon.
He told the Daily Mail: "I don't enjoy leaving good professionals on the bench, but that's life. I trust Gary. I want to help him, not make his life difficult.
"I would never do something that could jeopardise his selection for the national team. But at this moment John and David are playing well and giving stability.
"The most important thing is Chelsea. The second thing is the players. The third thing is the national team. That has to be my ranking. But all three can work together."
Cahill is likely to be left on the bench once again this afternoon when Chelsea face Cardiff City at Stamford Bridge.
