Chelsea skipper John Terry is ruled out of participating in the FIFA Club World Cup due to an ongoing knee injury.

Chelsea captain John Terry has been ruled out of the FIFA Club World Cup due to a knee injury.

Terry suffered ligament damage in his knee during Chelsea's 1-1 draw with Liverpool last month.

The former England skipper faced a race to be fit for the tournament, which Chelsea are involved in due to their Champions League success last season, but has been advised not to travel.

"We've been talking with the doctor. The inflammation during the flight will not be the best thing for him so he will not travel," interim manager Rafael Benitez said.

"He wanted to go and to help, but it's better that he stays here. We don't know when he will play. We have to wait and see how he reacts."

The FIFA Club World Cup will take place in Japan between the December 8 and 18.
