Chelsea player admits disappointment over denial of Olympics chance

A Chelsea player reveals his disappointment over being prevented from being able to represent his country at the 2024 Olympics.

Chelsea midfielder Enzo Fernandez has revealed that he "did everything possible" to represent Argentina at the 2024 Olympic Games.

In his relatively short career, Fernandez has already won a World Cup, as well as being named as the young player of that particular tournament.

The 23-year-old is also currently competing at the Copa America, hoping to add another trophy to his and his national team's collection.

However, it was widely reported at the end of the season that Fernandez was eager to continuing representing his country across the summer with the Olympics taking place in Paris.

Fernandez was allegedly in line to be selected for the tournament until Chelsea's hierarchy stepped in and prevented him from doing so.

With the Olympics not being a FIFA-regulated tournament, clubs have the power to insist that they remain on club duties, rather than on the international stage.

Fernandez speaks out on decision

Prior to now, Fernandez has not spoken publicly on his feelings over the matter, with Enzo Maresca said to want as many players as possible to be present for pre-season.

Nevertheless, speaking to TyC Sports, Fernandez has revealed that Maresca's predecessor Mauricio Pochettino - an Argentine compatriot - had given the green light for him to spend more time away.

He said: "I did everything possible. Mauricio (Pochettino) was at Chelsea before, he had given me the OK. Then, there was a change of coach and the club changed its position.

"I tried, I kept talking, I did everything possible to be there, but it wasn't possible.

"I apologize to Masche (Javier Mascherano). I wanted to be there. It didn't happen."

Other reasons behind Chelsea decision?

Fernandez is not the only player that Chelsea prevented from playing at the Olympics. Malo Gusto and Benoit Badiashile are also being forced to miss out.

Furthermore, Fernandez underwent hernia surgery towards the back end of the season, partly in order to play at the Copa America. At some point, Chelsea expect him to rest.

On the flip side, Lesley Ugochukwu has been allowed to link up with France, with the assumption being Chelsea feel the game time will benefit his progression after missing all but one game of the second half of the season.
