Eden Hazard could have stayed in the Premier League and earned more money than he is on at Real Madrid, according to ex-teammate Cesar Azpilicueta.

Cesar Azpilicueta has claimed that former teammate Eden Hazard turned down lucrative offers from Chelsea's Premier League rivals to join dream club Real Madrid.

The Belgian forward completed his long-awaited switch to the Bernabeu earlier this month in a reported £88.5m transfer, which could potentially climb to £120m with add-ons.

Hazard spent seven seasons at Stamford Bridge and won six major honours, including two Premier League titles, to earn legendary status.

According to Azpilicueta, the 28-year-old had the opportunity to join a rival club, but he was only interested in signing for Madrid.

"Honestly, the times that he had to cope with the rumours," he is quoted as saying by The Sun. "He always showed his desire not to sign for an English team, even if he could have better contracts.

"He has never been a selfish person. He always had this dream to play for Real Madrid and we will see what happens. But I think he has been very honest until the last day."

Hazard scored 110 goals in 352 games for Chelsea after joining from Lille in 2012.
