Shanghai Shenhua have taken the lead in the race to sign striker Nicolas Anelka from Chelsea.
Blues boss Andre Villas-Boas last night confirmed that both the Frenchman and Brazilian defender Alex had handed in transfer requests at Stamford Bridge, following reports that the pair were forced to train with the reserves.
Anelka, whose contract is scheduled to expire in the summer, has also been linked with a move to Liverpool as well as big-spending Russian outfit Anzhi Makhachkala.
The Chinese club are also believed to be targeting former Fulham coach Jean Tigana to take over management of the club.
