New York City hold Columbus Crew to draw after rain delay

Storms in the local area force the two sides off the pitch before Columbus Crew and New York City FC settle for a 2-2 draw at the MAPFRE Stadium.

New York City FC have moved five points clear of the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings after playing out a 2-2 draw with Columbus Crew in a match interrupted by poor weather at the MAPFRE Stadium.

The hosts started brightly and Federico Higuain forced Josh Saunders into a smart save on 14 minutes.

At the other end, the visitors could have gone ahead on 19 minutes but Jason Hernandez turned Andrea Pirlo's corner over the bar from three yards out.

It proved a costly miss as Kei Kamara broke the deadlock midway through the half by tapping home Ethan Finlay's teasing cross.

City responded well and Kwadwo Poku would have levelled up shortly after the half-hour mark if not for Steve Clark.

The Sky Blues finished the half on top and David Villa fired over the bar from inside the box on 38 minutes, before Clark tipped away his long-range drive on the stroke of half time.

They found their equaliser on 57 minutes when Poku latched on to Villa's neat through-ball before cleverly clipping over Clark to restore parity.

Poku struck again 10 minutes later to stun the hosts with a simple finish from close range after Andrew Jacobson had flicked on Pirlo's corner.

However, Columbus hit back quickly through Cedrick, who exchanged passes with Kamara before sprinting clear to slot home the leveller.

Just as the match looked set for a dramatic conclusion, the two sides were taken off the field for over an hour when storms in the local area forced MLS officials to consider the safety of players and supporters.

Neither team were able to create a clear opportunity when the game eventually restarted, and Columbus settled for a draw which leaves them four points behind second-placed New York Red Bulls in the Eastern Conference.
