Chris Dagnall fires Leyton Orient back to the summit

Leyton Orient return to the top of League One after debutant Chris Dagnall inspired his new club to a 2-1 win away to Crewe Alexandra.

Leyton Orient have moved top of League One with a 2-1 win away to Crewe Alexandra courtesy of a dream debut from second-half substitute Chris Dagnall.

Dagnall, who was snapped up on a free transfer earlier in the week, got his Orient career off to the best possible start by scoring twice within eight minutes to cancel out Byron Moore's earlier strike.

Consequently, the O's move back to the top of England's third tier by a point after former leaders Brentford were held to a 1-1 draw away to Walsall.

Chances were at a premium for both sides throughout the opening 45 minutes, with Kevin Lisbie the recipient of the best opportunity of the half.

Lisbie raced through on goal with goalkeeper Ben Garratt, but the 19-year-old emerged triumphant from the one-on-one with the veteran marksman and blocked the effort.

The hosts took the lead eight minutes into the second half when Orient shot-stopper Eldin Jakupovic palmed Moore's powerful effort against the post before watching it trickle over the line.

Russell Slade's men soon draw level through Dagnall - who replaced Robbie Simpson at half time - as the debutant latched on to an over-the-top ball before firing past Garratt into the bottom corner.

The comeback was complete eight minutes later as the 28-year-old struck again, this time executing a volley inside the area to give Slade's troops the lead.

The Railwaymen pressed for an equaliser, with Lisbie, in particular, providing a number of key defensive headers to preserve the lead and the visitors held on for the victory.
