Derby County, Burnley ends in stalemate

Burnley miss out on the chance to edge into the Championship's automatic promotion places following a goalless draw away at Derby County in Monday's clash at the iPro.

Burnley have missed out on the chance to edge into the Championship's automatic promotion places following a goalless draw away at Derby County.

Following a slow start at the iPro, the hosts appealed for a penalty when Andreas Weimann tumbled in the box six minutes in, but the referee waved play on.

Michael Kightly was then responsible for a pinpoint cross into the area which fell to Andre Gray, who headed over just after the referee blew his whistle for a push.

Burnley goalkeeper Tom Heaton nearly cost his side a goal 24 minutes in when he flapped at a Derby cross, but Weimann fluffed his lines by firing over on the rebound.

Four minutes before half time Derby failed to clear a corner, with the ball falling to George Boyd, but he mis-kicked his chance from seven yards out.

At the other end, only a block from Tendayi Darikwa came between Chris Martin and the opening goal as both sides were forced to go in goalless at the break.

Paul Clement's charges dominated possession after the restart, with Jacob Butterfield fashioning an opening and firing well over.

Chances were few and far between in the second half, Burnley notching up only their second shot on target through Sam Vokes, whose effort deflected off Jason Shackell and into the arms of Scott Carson.

In the latter stages of the game, however, both sides came to life, with Richard Keogh forcing a goalline clearance from Darikwa before George Thorne's long-range follow-up forced a firm stop from Heaton.

At the other end, the Clarets broke swiftly, Vokes collecting Boyd's cutback but rifling over the bar, before the pendulum swung back the other way through Johnny Russell's header.

Despite the late flurry of action, neither side could break the deadlock, which meant that the spoils had to be shared come the final whistle.

The result sees the Rams climb one place to 11th in the Championship table, just above Nottingham Forest, while Burnley go up to third, two points behind Middlesbrough.
