Roy Hodgson remains confident that Wayne Rooney will break the England goalscoring record, despite a frustrating evening for the striker against San Marino.
The 28-year-old scored from the spot at Wembley last night to bag his 42nd Three Lions goal, putting him just seven behind Bobby Charlton's long-standing record.
"I don't think I should be putting any pressure on him to reach any targets early. I'm sure he will get there," Hodgson is quoted as saying by the Daily Star.
Despite Rooney closing in on Charlton's tally, the England boss was forced to defend his captain's performance following the 5-0 rout, adding: "I don't think it will play on his mind at all. He got in a lot of times. You'd have to ask him if he was frustrated."
Next up for England is a trip to Estonia, where they will be looking to maintain their 100% record in qualifying for Euro 2016.
