Wayne Rooney eyeing up England legends

England hitman Wayne Rooney admits that Bobby Charlton's all-time scoring record is in the back of his mind ahead of qualifiers with San Marino and Estonia.

Wayne Rooney has admitted that he is eyeing up Bobby Charlton's all-time goalscoring record for England.

With 41 international goals, the Manchester United hitman is just eight away from Charlton's haul of 49.

He may well bridge that gap in the upcoming Euro 2016 qualifiers with San Marino and Estonia, but Rooney - who is also three away from Jimmy Greaves's record - says that the results come first.

"It's there. There's no denying it," the 28-year-old told reporters ahead of tonight's clash with San Marino. "Jimmy Greaves is there and if I can overtake him this week, in the coming weeks, the coming months, that would be great.

"It's not something going into the game [I'm] thinking: 'Oh, I've got to beat Jimmy Greaves's record to get close to Bobby Charlton'.

"I'm wanting to do well for the team and if I can score goals then great and the most important thing for us is to perform well and to win the games."

Rooney will captain England against the minnows - rated 208th in the FIFA world rankings - at Wembley tonight.
