West Bromwich Albion backroom staff proud of Saido Berahino call-up

West Bromwich Albion academy manger Mark Harrison is proud of Saido Berahino's England call-up.

Saido Berahino could become the first outfield West Bromwich Albion player to be capped by England since 1984 if he gets onto the pitch against Slovenia at Wembley this evening.

The Baggies' last homegrown player to be capped was Derek Statham over 30 years ago, and West Brom's backroom staff are excited by the prospect of that stat being updated.

"It will be a fantastic day for the Academy if Saido plays," academy manager Mark Harrison told the club's official website. "It will be a proud moment for everybody that works at the academy but there are a lot of unsung heroes behind Saido's development.

"A lot of hard work has gone into developing the Academy in the last nine or 10 years and Saido was at the beginning of that journey.

"The last [outfield] England player to represent this club was a long time ago and he hadn't come through the system that Saido has come through."

England will be looking to maintain their 100% record in qualifying for Euro 2016 when they host Slovenia tonight.
