Dietmar Hamann: 'England finally creating team spirit'

Ex-Germany midfielder Dietmar Hamann believes that past England teams have been picked purely on reputation.

Former Germany international Dietmar Hamann believes that English football must take some tough decisions if they want success at international level, with the Premier League not producing enough homegrown talent.

The Three Lions successfully qualified for next summer's World Cup last month, with preparations for that tournament continuing in a friendly against Germany at Wembley later this evening.

The ex-Liverpool midfielder told The Mirror: "I look at the England team in the last few years and for me, they haven't picked a team, just picked players with the biggest reputation.

"I thought under Fabio Capello that would change, he would look at what worked best as a team. but it didn't change and you saw at the last World Cup certain players were only thinking of themselves.

"I think if you look at Roy Hodgson, he is doing a great job of at least creating a team spirit and making everyone feel together again. But It doesn't matter what mentality you have if you are not producing the players and that's where England have to take a hard look, because are they bringing the right players through?"

Hamann played 59 times for Germany during an eight-year international career.
