Jack Wilshere to miss England friendly against Italy due to knee injury

England confirm that Arsenal midfielder Jack Wilshere will not feature in Tuesday's friendly against Italy at Wembley Stadium.

England have announced that Jack Wilshere is out of the squad due to his failure to recover from a knee problem.

The Arsenal midfielder missed the 1-0 friendly win over the Netherlands on Friday with what was described as a minor injury.

Wilshere was expected to recover in time for Tuesday's friendly against Italy at Wembley Stadium, but the Three Lions have now confirmed that the playmaker will play no part in the game.

The Football Association announced the news on Saturday afternoon, while also giving an update on Liverpool's Joe Gomez, who limped off early on in the win over the Oranje in Amsterdam.

"Jack Wilshere will not return to the England camp ahead of Tuesday night's fixture against Italy at Wembley," the statement read.

"The Arsenal midfielder didn't travel to Amsterdam as a precaution and will remain with his club.

"Meanwhile, Joe Gomez remains with the squad for further assessment following his 10th-minute withdrawal from last night's win over the Netherlands."

Wilshere has made 33 appearances for Arsenal in all competitions this season.
