Former Netherlands winger Bryan Roy says that he "can't believe" that the FA have appointed "unsuccessful" Stuart Pearce on a short-term basis.

Former Netherlands international Bryan Roy has criticised the Football Association for appointing Stuart Pearce as England's interim coach following the departure of Fabio Capello.

Pearce takes the Three Lions to Wembley tonight for an international friendly against their Dutch opponents, but Roy believes that the England Under-21 coach is not good enough for the role.

"I simply can't believe he is now coach of England," The Mirror quotes Roy as saying. "As a coach he was inexperienced and unsuccessful leaving the entire organisation and training work to his assistants because he wanted to play himself.

"I've worked under a number of top trainers, like Louis van Gaal when he was with Ajax and Pearce was in [great] contrast to him.

"So how he managed to get such a position within the English FA is amazing. But he must have done something good."

Both coaches played together during their time at Nottingham Forest.
