Sven-Goran Eriksson backs England psychiatrist decision

Former England boss Sven-Goran Eriksson believes that Roy Hodgson is right to take sports psychiatrist Dr Steve Peters to the World Cup in Brazil.

Former England manager Sven-Goran Eriksson has claimed that Roy Hodgson has made the right decision to take sports psychiatrist Dr Steve Peters to the World Cup in Brazil.

Hodgson has previously admitted that the use of a psychologist could boost his side's chances of winning any penalty shootout that they may enter.

Eriksson was in charge of England when they were knocked out of Euro 2004 and the 2006 World Cup on penalties.

"I should have taken a mental coach to train the players in penalties," Eriksson told BBC Radio 5 live.

"I think you need a sports psychologist to handle these kind of things. Roy has done the right thing to do that.

"It is difficult for a coach or a manager, you can do a lot with the players but when it comes to feeling that pressure we are not really specialists."

England have lost six of the seven penalty shootouts that they have faced at major tournaments since 1990.
