Steven Gerrard: 'England not obsessed with penalty shootouts'

Steven Gerrard insists that England will practise penalties, but will not become obsessed with the prospect of a shootout at the World Cup.

England captain Steven Gerrard has insisted that he and his teammates will practise penalties, but will not become obsessed by the prospect of a shootout during the World Cup.

The Three Lions have been knocked out of six of their last 10 major tournaments on penalties, the latest being at the European Championships in 2012.

England are currently preparing for the World Cup, which gets underway next Thursday in Brazil, with two warm-up matches in Miami.

"We are going to practise penalties a lot but it is a difficult situation to put into words and describe it," Gerrard told BBC Radio 5 live. "There is a lot of pressure.

"You have an awful lot more time to think about your penalty and what is at stake is a lot bigger and it is a pressure situation.

"I can understand the fixation because we have failed in quite a few shoot-outs but I would say don't get carried away with it because it might never come about."

The England squad will be travelling to South America with sports psychiatrist Dr Steve Peters, who is believed to be helping the players mentally prepare for possible shootouts.

The Three Lions will begin their campaign with a Group D clash against Italy in Manaus on June 14.
