Roy Hodgson: 'Steven Gerrard can stay England captain after World Cup'

Roy Hodgson says that Steven Gerrard can remain as England captain until Euro 2016, if he wants.

England manager Roy Hodgson has told captain Steven Gerrard that he wants him to continue leading the national side beyond this summer's World Cup in Brazil.

Gerrard will turn 34 later this month and has been widely reported to be considering his international future, but Hodgson says that he can carry on in both roles until Euro 2016.

He was quoted by The Mirror as saying: "I did at one stage broach the subject with him and he knows I would like him to go on beyond this World Cup because he's still such a good player with Liverpool and in great form.

"It would be a disappointment for me if he decides 'no that's enough for me internationally'.

"I haven't spoken to Steven recently about it because I know he's had his boots more than full with trying to win a title. But I will be choosing the right moment to bring it up."

England's first game of the World Cup takes place against Italy in Manaus on June 14.
