UEFA committee member Karen Espelund believes that expanding the European Championships to 24 teams is a natural progression.
The elite tournament is due to add another 8 nations to the current 16-team format in 2016, which has sparked controversy with many suggesting that the quality of football will diminish with additional teams involved.
"If you look back at history, Europe has also been expanding," Espelund told BBC Radio Five Live. "The Soviet Union broke up and so did Yugoslovia and Uefa now has 53 member countries, it was time to discuss expanding the Euros."
Meanwhile, the first quarter-final of Euro 2012 saw Portugal progress into the semi-finals following a 1-0 win over the Czech Republic last night.
