Everton manager Roberto Martinez has played down comparisons between Ross Barkley and Paul Gascoigne after labelling the youngster as "unique".
Former England striker Gary Lineker likened Barkley to 'Gazza' following his performance in the Blues' 1-1 draw against Arsenal on Sunday.
However, Martinez responded by telling the Liverpool Echo: "It's an interesting topic. I've seen Ross Barkley and at times I've seen bits of Michael Ballack and at times I've seen bits of Gazza.
"That's for you to make those comparisons because I can guarantee you, Ross Barkley is quite unique. He has that gift and that talent.
"He has incredible balance with both feet, is really strong, is very powerful and is developing an incredible awareness around him which is important, but technically he's someone that you could compare to a young Brazilian, young Dutch or even Spanish players."
Martinez's side are currently fifth in the Premier League.
