Everton manager Roberto Martinez has returned to former club Wigan Athletic to sign midfielder James McCarthy for £12m.
The Toffees had failed in a swoop for the 22-year-old, after Latics chairman David Whelan refused to accept an offer that involved the fee being paid in instalments.
However, the Goodison Park outfit later met Wigan's valuation of McCarthy, just before the close of the summer window, which shut at 11pm on Monday.
The Ireland international will help fill the void left by Marouane Fellaini, who left Everton to sign for Manchester United in a £27.5m deal, also late on transfer deadline day.
Meanwhile, Chelsea striker Romelu Lukaku has moved to Merseyside on a season-long loan deal, and Manchester City midfielder Gareth Barry could yet follow suit.
