Report: Newcastle United, Everton lodge James McCarthy bids

James McCarthy may be poised to return to the Premier League following reports that Everton and Newcastle have both bid for the Wigan Athletic star.

Premier League duo Newcastle United and Everton have each submitted an offer for highly-rated Wigan Athletic star James McCarthy, according to a report.

Both clubs may be in the market for midfield reinforcements, if the Toffees lose Marouane Fellaini and the Magpies Yohan Cabaye, who are the subject of interest from Manchester United and Arsenal respectively, before the close of the transfer window.

Everton boss Roberto Martinez managed the 23-year-old while he was in charge at the DW Stadium, where McCarthy regularly impressed in the top flight last season despite Wigan's relegation campaign.

Martinez has been monitoring the Ireland international's availability all summer, but Newcastle are also in the running and Sky Sports News understands that both clubs have lodged bids.

It is thought that an offer of around £15m would be enough for Wigan to part with McCarthy, who netted three Premier League goals and helped the Latics win the FA Cup for the first time in their history last year.
