Feyenoord see off Utrecht

Feyenoord survive the second-half dismissal of Rick Karsdorp to record a 3-2 win over Utrecht in their Eredivisie opener.

Feyenoord have started their new Eredivisie campaign by earning a 3-2 victory over FC Utrecht, despite finishing the match with 10 men.

The hosts took the lead in the 22nd minute when Colin Kazim-Richards rose highest to power in a header from Marko Vejinovic's free kick.

Feyenoord were then dealt a blow shortly after half time when Rick Karsdorp was shown a straight red card.

Utrecht soon made their numerical advtange count as Sebastien Haller slotted in from close range after Yassin Ayoub's strike had been spilled by the keeper.

However, just three minutes later, the hosts retook the lead when Tonny Vilhena guided in Karim El Ahmadi's cross.

With nine minutes left to play, Feyenoord were given a penalty after Bilal Basacikoglu was brought down by Yannick Cortie and Dirk Kuyt stepped up to score from the spot.

Utrecht were then awarded a penalty of their own in stoppage time which was converted by Haller, but it proved to be the last action of the game as Feyenoord held on to pick up all three points.
