Fiorentina and Roma contested the fourth and final quarter-final of the Coppa Italia at Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence on Wednesday.
In what proved to be an eventful match that had three players sent off, Mattia Destro's strike in the seventh minute of extra time saw the visitors from Rome win 1-0.

The game will be held at Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, so Fiorentina will have the edge as they will be at home. However, Vincenzo Montella’s side are struggling for form and Roma have as good a chance as them to win the clash.

Roma coach Zdenek Zeman has been forced to change his lineup for tonight’s game. Francesco Totti is injured and Pablo Osvaldo and Erik Lamela both are suspended, which means that Mattia Destro, Miralem Pjanic and Alessandro Florenzi will be three attacking players for the visitors.
Federico Balzaretti will play a bit higher up on the pitch, as Roma will deploy a 3-4-3 system tonight and not Zeman’s usual 4-3-3. Goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg was forced to pull out with a gastroenteritis attack, so 24-year-old Mauro Goicoechea will start between the posts for the visitors.
David Pizarro has recovered from his ankle injury but only makes the bench for Fiorentina, for whom Alberto Aquilani starts alongside Borja Valero in midfield. Stevan Jovetic and Luca Toni are the two forwards for the Viola tonight.
Montella has not drafted back Emiliano Viviano into the starting lineup after dropping him from the team in recent games in favour of Neto, who starts tonight again.
Let’s now hear what the two managers had to say ahead of the match. First up is Roma coach Zeman: “They (Fiorentina) are a team that play good football. They have lost their last few matches, but that's only because they failed to exploit their chances. In other countries this type of competition is very important. But in Italy it only seems important in the latter stages. But for me this competition has always been important.”
Fiorentina coach Montella said on Tuesday: “Tomorrow's quarter-final is important for us. Reaching the semis would almost certainly mean we get a place in the Europa League. In the League we suffered against Roma's good counter-attacking play, so hopefully we can guard against that on Wednesday.”
Fiorentina and Roma have already met this season in Serie A. The game between two of Italy’s most attacking teams on December 8 at Roma’s Stadio Olimpico saw a total of six goals. Roma ran out 4-2 winners against Fiorentina in what was one of the most enthralling matches in Italy this season. You can read the match report here.
I hope that we get a repeat of that game tonight. All of the quarter-final ties in the Coppa Italia this season have produced goals: Lazio defeated Catania 3-0 with ease, Juventus won 2-1 against AC Milan after extra time and Inter Milan edged out Bologna 3-2 at home also after extra time. Incidentally, all the sides playing at home have gone through to the semi-finals. So advantage Fiorentina?
Just under four minutes to kickoff in Florence where Fiorentina and Roma will contest the right to play Inter Milan in the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. Remember, if it ends all square, then the match will go into extra time and after that penalties. No replays in the Coppa Italia at this stage.
Just a couple of minutes to kickoff in Florence. Both sets of players are out on the pitch.
Fiorentina kick off proceedings against Roma in the fourth and final Coppa Italia quarter-final tie.
MISS! Fiorentina on the attack right from the start, as Borja Valero floats in a free kick from the right that Marquinhos clears away for a corner just in time. The Viola cannot create anything productive from the set piece.
The Viola have started the game on a brighter note than Roma, as Alberto Aquilani tries a flick that does put the visiting defenders into some trouble.
Good move from Roma there, as Ivan Piris runs down the right flank to float in a cross. It is a good floating cross that is turned out for a corner.
MISS! Roma go close to breaking the deadlock! The corner is floated in and Daniele De Rossi tries to glance it home, but his attempt goes just wide of the post.
There has been a good start to the match, as both Fiorentina and Roma have had chances to take an early lead. However, there is not much momentum to the match and the intensity is missing as well. But we are still in the very early stages of the game.
Good defensive play from Roma as the defenders move off their line just in time. Borja Valero tries to send Stevan Jovetic through on goal with a long ball from the midfield, but the attacker is caught offside.
Ten minutes gone in the match and it is still goallless between the two teams in the fourth and final Coppa Italia quarter-final tie.
CHANCE! JOVETIC! Great effort from the youngster as he finds himself with a loose ball just in front of the Roma penalty area. He unleashes a first-time shot that goes over the Roma crossbar. It did not trouble Mauro Goicoechea, but Roma defenders need to be careful.
CHANCE! Roma have two snapshots denied! First Alessandro Florenzi’s attempt from inside the box is parried away by Murara Neto. The rebound falls to Miralem Pjanic, whose shot is blocked by Gonzalo Rodriguez.
Neither Fiorentina nor Roma have actually imposed themselves on the game, which is very much open. In the last few minutes the Viola have struggled to get out of their own half of the pitch as the Lupi are starting to get comfortable at Stadio Artemio Franchi.
CHANCE! Luca Toni goes close for Fiorentina! Juan Cuadrado whips in a cross from the right that the veteran Italian striker heads towards goal at the near post under pressure from Mauro Goicoechea. It goes wide, and Toni’s protests that it should have been given a corner falls on deaf ears.
Fiorentina are now having a good spell, as Jovetic’s attempted chip is well read by Roma goalkeeper Goicoechea, who rushes out of his line to claim the ball with ease.
Twenty minutes gone in the first half and it is still goalless. There have been chances for either side, but they have been largely due to individual errors rather than magical moments.
Good defensive display from Burdisso as he makes a clean challenge on Jovetic to dispossess him of the ball and get it out of danger.
Jovetic again finds himself with the ball in a good position outside the Roma box and takes a quick shot, but he has no luck in getting it past Goicoechea.
NETO! Brilliant goalkeeper by the 23-year-old, who makes a brave catch of the ball just as Florenzi was about to get to the end of a brilliant Miralem Pjanic. That is one of the few times Pjanic has been involved in the game tonight - he has been largely anonymous.
Excellent challenge from Nicolas Burdisso on Juan Cuadrado inside the Roma area. The Fiorentina defender weaves his way into the Lupi box and seems to be on his way to the goal when the Argentine defenders makes another clear challenge.
Roma under pressure again, this time Leandro Castan heading the ball away just as Luca Toni was about to get at the end of a good delivery. The home side are having a good spell once again. I guess after a while it will be Roma who will have a good spell - the match has been like that so far.
MISS! Brilliant, brilliant play from Mattia Destro. Michael Bradley wins the ball in the midfield for Roma and then releases Destro, who gallops with the ball, gets past Gonzalo Rodríguez and then takes an attempt on goal from inside the area. It goes narrowly wide of the upright.
Half an hour gone in the game and it remains goalless. There have been bright sparks in the match and it remains an entertaining and evenly contested clash.
Brilliant play from Destro as he earns Roma a free kick near the corner flag after Jovetic brings him down. Can they score from this chance?
MISS! No, they cannot, but Marquinhos goes close as he rises above the others to nod the free kick towards goal. It goes just wide of the far post. It was actually a free header, the Fiorentina defenders leaving Marquinhos unmarked. Poor defending from the home side.
YELLOW CARD Alessandro Florenzi is the first player booked tonight for a late challenge on Stevan Jovetic.
CHANCE! Oh, Florenzi should have got a touch on the ball! Bradley whips in a good ball from the right aimed at the far post, but the Roma midfielder fails to collect it and lets it run out for a goal kick. Any sort of touch and it would have seen Roma go 1-0 up.
YELLOW CARD Nicolás Burdisso is shown the yellow card for a body-check on Jovetic. The Roma defenders claims that he did not commit any foul, but Nicola Rizzoli has his mind made up.
OFF THE BAR Fiorentina almost score their opening goal of the evening! Aquilani’s free kick from 25 yards rattles the crossbar! Oh, how unlucky can he be!
Now Roma get a free kick of their own, as Gonzalo Rodriguez is adjudged to have committed a foul on Mattia Destro. Miralem Pjanic readies himself to take it...
YELLOW CARD Oh, Pjanic is booked now for the referee for what I believe timewasting. That is a poor yellow card for the midfielder.
Pjanic eventually takes the free kick and it goes wide. All that for a missed chance!
We are now in the final minute of the first half. Just one minute of injury time has been added.
Aquilani takes the final meaningful shot of the half, but it is hit straight at Goicoechea.
HALF-TIME: Fiorentina 0-0 Roma
It is half time at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence and it is goalless between Fiorentina and Roma. It has been a good and entertaining first half with both sides creating chances, but there has been a visible lack of intensity. It has also been largely disjointed with neither side really asserting themselves on the match.
Fiorentina came closest to taking the lead four minutes from the half-time whistle, as Alberto Aquilani’s free kick from 25 yards came off the Roma crossbar. Three Roma players have been booked tonight already as their disciplinary problems continue.
If it remains goalless at the end of the second half, then the match will head into extra time. Last night the clash between Inter Milan and Bologna did go into extra time, and so did last week’s tie between Juventus and AC Milan. However, both of those games saw goals in normal time.
The second half will begin in a matter of minutes now. It will be interesting to observe what approach the sides takes in the opening minutes of the half. I have a feeling that an early goal could prove to be the difference in this evenly contested tie.
The two sets of players are now getting ready to come on to the pitch, as the second-half action is imminent.
The players are now on to the pitch for what should be a very interesting and hopefully exciting second half.
Roma get the second half underway. No changes for either side at half time.
Oh, Roma create half a chance there as Destro tries to get at the end of a long-range free kick. However, he is flagged offside. In any case, he did not get a clean touch on the ball that Fiorentina cleared away with ease.
MISS! Terrible, terrible miss from Alessandro Florenzi! Nenad Tomovic’s poor backpass sees Mattia Destro collect the ball on the right, runs towards the bye-line and then tee up Florenzi at the far post. But the midfielder’s attempt is thwarted by Neto.
That should have been Roma’s opening goal of the game. It was a howler from Tomovic but Florenzi should have done better with all the time and space he was awarded by a napping Fiorentine defence.
YELLOW CARD Leandro Castan is shown the yellow card now for his challenge on Juan Cuadrado. He is the fourth Roma player to be booked tonight.
Florenzi again goes for goal with a snapshot and again Neto makes an easy save.
YELLOW CARD Another booking for Roma, this time it is Michael Bradley for his bad challenge on Borja Valero. The referee played advantage to Fiorentina who earn a corner from the move but that does not lead to anything concrete.
Jovetic now runs down the left and then shoots on goal, but it is not a very powerful shot; at least not powerful enough for Goicoechea to worry too much.
The game has become more intense now. The second half has certainly picked up pace and the two sides are showing more urgency.
SUBSTITUTION Roma make their first change of the match. Jose Rodolfo Dodo comes on for Federico Balzaretti, who had a quiet game by his standards tonight.
YELLOW CARD Alberto Aquilani become the first Fiorentina player to be booked tonight. Five against one now.
Dodo earns a corner kick for Roma. Good first piece of action for the second-half substitute. Can Roma create anything productive now?
No, they cannot. They decided to take the corner shot and eventually lose the ball ball. Fiorentina threaten to launch a counterattack but fail, which leads to Roma gaining possession. Bradley makes a good run with the ball, but makes a bad decision to shoot instead of passing it to an unmarked Destro and sees his attempt blocked and cleared away.
SUBSTITUTION Fiorentina make their first change of the evening. Souza. Romulo replaces Giulio Migliaccio.
Half-chance for Roma. Ivan Piris runs down the right flank, whips in a cross that comes off a defender and falls on to the path of Pjanic, who takes a swing at it only to see it go wide of the mark.
CHANCE! Wonderful defending from Nicolas Burdisso, absolutely brilliant! A Fiorentina corner is taken and just as Luca Toni is about to head it home, the defender gets the ball out for another corner that the home side fail to take advantage of. Burdisso has been the pick of the defenders for me tonight.
Twenty minutes of normal time left in this Coppa Italia quarter-final tie. It is goalless between Fiorentina and Roma, but there have been positive signs in regards to a goal. Both teams are showing urgency to score and make sure that the game does not go into extra time.
Valero is sent through on goal from a long ball from inside the Fiorentina half, but he is flagged offside by the referee.
All Fiorentina in the last few minutes, as Jovetic takes an attempt on the Roma goal from outside the box but fails to find the target. The visitors are struggling to get the ball out of their own half at the moment and seem inclined to play on the break for now.
YELLOW CARD Fiorentina earn their second booking of the evening. Nenad Tomovic’s largely needless challenge on Bradley inside the centre circle sees him get into the referee’s book.
I am increasingly getting the feeling that a single goal will settle the affair. Whichever side scores in the final 15 or so minutes of the contest will win it.
Fiorentina hogging possession at the moment and are forcing Roma to defend deep. Romulo whips in a cross from the right but Goicoechea collects it with ease.
SUBSTITUTION Vincenzo Montella makes another change. Luca Toni goes off for Adem Ljajic.
GOAL RULED OUT Daniele De Rossi heads the ball into the Fiorentina net from a long-range free kick but he is flagged offside! The Italian midfielder knows that the decision is correct and does not protest it.
SUBSTITUTION Roma make another change. Rodrigo Taddei replaces Ivan Piris.
MISS! Oh dear, Destro blasts his shot way over the crossbar from the left side of the Fiorentina penalty box. Admittedly, he had two defenders at his feet, but there is no excuse in mishitting the shot like that!
CHANCE! Roma survive a scare again as the ball ping-pongs inside the penalty area that Goicoechea fails to collect. It is desperately cleared away by Marquinhos.
Fiorentina create more confusion inside the Roma box, as Tomovic heads a free kick towards goal but it hits Gonzalo. Five minutes of normal time remain. After that we will have extra time.
Fiorentina continue to dominate proceedings and are still maintaining possession. When they lose the ball, they get it back in a matter of moments as Roma are mispassing more frequently than they should.
Another Manuel Pasqual cross from the left-flank, another desperate clearance from Roma. All Fiorentina in the final minute of the match, but credit to the visiting side, they are resolute in defence.
Three minutes of injury time have been added. Will we see a late, late goal?
The players are tired at the moment and are probably not looking forward to the 30 minutes of extra time they would have to play. Florenzi tries to set up Destro from the right, but the Roma forward cannot reach to the ball in time.
OFF THE POST Borja Valero hits the outside of the post from the left side of the penalty area! That would have been the winner for Fiorentina.
CHANCE! Stefan Savic makes a game-saving headed clearance as he keeps out Destro’s effort in the final seconds of the encounter!
Fiorentina 0-0 Roma The match will now head into 30 minutes of extra time as it finishes goalless after 90 minutes.
WOW! Both Roma and Fiorentina could have won this quarter-final tie in the final minute of the match! First Valero sees his fierce effort rattle the post and then Savic makes a last-ditch clearance to take the match into extra time.
The players are now bracing themselves for 30 minutes of extra time. All of them are looking tired but they have to play on. If it stays goalless at the end of the 30-minute period, then the game will head into penalties.
Fiorentina kick off proceedings in extra time...
The intensity has understandably dropped now, but the pattern of the game remains the same. Fiorentina are hogging possession of the ball in the very early stages of the extra-time period.
Nothing notable to report on the last couple of minutes’ action. The home continue to tease the Roma defence and are keeping the play inside the Roma half of the pitch.
GOAL! Fiorentina 0-1 Roma (Destro)
Roma break the deadlock in the seventh minute of extra time and do so against the run of play. Michael Bradley releases Miralem Pjanic, who runs down the right and drills in a low cross that Mattia Destro taps in from just yards out. It was a well-worked goal and Destro finally can smile tonight.
Cuadrado takes a shot from a tight angle but cannot keep it on target. He was set up by a good backheel from Jovetic, who has been good and lively tonight. Roma are on course to progressing to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia as they lead 1-0 in extra time.
SUBSTITUTION Panagiotis Tachtsidis comes on for Miralem Pjanic, the creator of Destro’s goal.
CHANCE! Goicoechea makes a good save there, as he tips a Fiorentina free kick just over his crossbar for a corner, which yields nothing for the home side.
OFF THE POST Cuadrado hits the post! Oh, how unlucky can Fiorentina be! A ball over the top is misjudged by Dodo and Cuadrado hits it first time. It strikes the post and comes right back at him; he then heads it only to see Goicoechea clear it away with a diving save.
EXTRA TIME HALF-TIME: Fiorentina 0-1 Roma
Fifteen more minutes for Fiorentina to score and take the match to penalties. They have been denied by the frame of the Roma goal three times - Aquilani, Valero and Cuadrado all will deem themselves unlucky.
The second half of the extra-time period begins now...
SUBSTITUTION Fiorentina make a change at the start of the second half of the extra-time period. Montella brings on Cristian Llama for Manuel Pasqual.
Jovetic makes the first genuine attempt on goal in the second period of extra time, but his effort is well wide. Fiorentina are trailing 1-0, thanks to Mattia Destro’s goal in the 97th minute.
Destro is down on the pitch in front of the Fiorentina penalty area as Gonzalo Rodriguez catches him. It is an off-the-ball incident and it appears that Destro is genuinely hurt. He is being treated now and should be ready for action in a matter of moments.
Roma are just trying to run down the clock. The momentum of the game has severely dropped. Fiorentina are controlling possession but the visitors are defending resolutely.
MISS! Good effort from Adem Ljajic that goes just over the Roma crossbar. He cuts inside from the left, gets past Bradley and then takes a shot on goal, but fails to trouble Goicoechea.
Oh, that could have put Roma into a trouble. Llama whips in a cross from the left that runs a long way inside the box and is eventually cleared away by Dodo, who has been all over the place since coming on this evening.
YELLOW CARD Roma add another yellow card to his tally. Rodrigo Taddei is cautioned for throwing the ball away after he goes down.
Good block from Neto as he comes out of his line and denies Destro just as the Roma forward looked to be through on goal.
RED CARD! Rodrigo Taddei is dismissed! It appears that he has been sent off for protesting, as his challenge on Valero just outside the Roma penalty area was not deemed a foul. A bit of confusion there, but Roma are down to 10 men for the final three minutes of the game.
Just two minutes remain in this match. Fiorentina are still 1-0 behind but Roma are now a man down.
YELLOW CARD Now Stefan Savic gets himself a yellow card. Nine yellow cards and one red in this match, if I am counting correctly.
Three minutes of injury time have been added at the end of the extra-time period.
RED CARD! Cuadrado and Dodo have been sent off for fighting! Cuadrado elbowed Dodo, who then reacted to that, and the referee has dismissed both of them. Roma are now to nine men, Fiorentina down to 10.
Cuadrado and Dodo continue to take their ‘discussion’ while walking off the pitch. It is getting ugly now, as Roma players are behind their goal confronting what appears to be Fiorentina staff.
Okay, action resumes now. Roma are 1-0 up but two men down, while Fiorentina are a man down.
FULL TIME: Fiorentina 0-1 Roma
It’s all over at the Stadio Artemio Franchi in Florence, as Roma have defeated Fiorentina 1-0 to progress to the semi-finals of the Coppa Italia. Neither side could break the deadlock in normal time and took the game into extra time. It was Mattia Destro, who won the contest for the visiting team with a simple tap-in in the 97th minute.
However, there was still more drama to come in Florence as both sides had players sent off. First, Rodrigo Taddei was dismissed for dissent on 117 minutes and minutes later Juan Cuadrado and Dodo were sent off for fighting. Roma finished the game with nine men, while Fiorentina ended the contest with 10.
Yet Roma will be the happier of the two teams as they will now play Inter Milan in the semi-finals. Our match report of tonight’s game here.
I hope that you enjoyed our live coverage of what proved to be an eventful Coppa Italia quarter-final tie between Fiorentina and Roma. Have a good night. It’s goodbye from me for now.
