Hamburg have earned a point at Freiburg in the Bundesliga with a goalless draw despite playing most of the match with 10 men.
Paul Scharner was sent off in the first half in what was his first start for HSV since his summer move.
In the seventh minute Julian Schuster was the first player from either side to make any meaningful attempt on goal, but the Freiburg midfielder's shot from close range went wide.
A minute later Maximilian Beister forced Oliver Baumann into making a save with a shot taken from outside the box.
Max Kruse of Freiburg and Hamburg's Heung-Min Son exchanged chances thereafter, before Beister came close on 15 minutes.
Chances continued to come at either end, but Hamburg were dealt a huge blow in the 35th minute when Scharner was sent off for a second bookable offence.
However, six minutes into the restart it was HSV who could have taken the lead, but Baumann denied Tolgay Arslan with a save.
Thereafter, Freiburg began to take advantage of their numerical superiority, Cedric Makiadi, Daniel Caligiuri and Kruse trying their luck.
Then four minutes from full-time Jan Rosenthal crashed his shot against the Hamburg post, as the game eventually ended in a 0-0 draw.
