Germany Women striker Celia Sasic announces retirement

Germany Women striker Celia Sasic announces her retirement from football, having scored 63 goals in 111 games for the national team.

Germany Women striker Celia Sasic has announced her retirement from football at the age of 27.

The forward was the top scorer at the 2015 Women's World Cup, finding the net six times.

Sasic won two European Championships with Germany and scored 63 goals for the national side.

She claimed on her Facebook page that she wishes to finish her studies and raise a family.

"I regret Celia's decision, but she also understands that football is not everything in life and there always comes a moment in life when you need to focus on other priorities," Germany Women coach Silvia Neid is quoted as saying by BBC Sport.

"She was always a role model, on and off the pitch. We won important games because of her; she took on responsibility and completely fulfilled her role as a leading figure. From the bottom of my heart, I wish her all the best for the next step in her life."

Sasic, who helped Frankfurt win the 2015 Champions League title, earned 111 caps for Germany Women.
