Peter Taylor may seek emergency cover for Stuart Nelson

Gillingham manager Peter Taylor admits that he may have to bring in emergency goalkeeping cover to compensate for the injury to first-choice stopper Stuart Nelson.

Gillingham manager Peter Taylor has admitted that he may be forced into the transfer market to compensate for the injury to first-choice goalkeeper Stuart Nelson.

A hand injury forced Nelson off at half time in Gillingham's 4-2 defeat to MK Dons in their opening League One game of the season this weekend.

Taylor is content to make do with back-up stopper Glenn Morris and England Under-18 international Tom Hadler for their Capital One Cup tie against Yeovil Town on Tuesday, but has suggested that he may look to sign more experienced cover once he learns Nelson's full diagnosis.

"Stuart definitely hasn't got a broken thumb but he's got some ligament damage we think," Taylor told the Gills' official website. "For where it is, that could be a three-month job.

"We'll just have to see how serious it is. Glenn Morris will play at Yeovil in the Capital One Cup, with Tom Hadler on the bench.

When asked about bringing in cover, Taylor replied: "Yes I think so, we'll have to do that and I've got my eye on one or two at the minute. I'm just waiting to find out the length and if I find out he's out for long I can go to the other club and say can we have a loan for that time. Hopefully it's a very short period, but if it's longer we need to cover it."

Nelson has made 99 appearances for Gillingham since joining from Notts County in 2012.
