Greece 1-0 Russia

Greece secure a Euro 2012 quarter-final spot following a 1-0 win over Russia on Saturday.

Greece have booked their spot in the quarter-finals of Euro 2012 with a 1-0 win over Russia on Saturday.

It was Russia who started the match in complete control, and they might have led with a succession of early chances from Andrey Arshavin and Alan Dzageov.

Greece were not without their pressure, however, and Kostas Katsouranis so nearly flicked a header past Vyacheslav Malafeev after seven minutes of play.

Greece took the lead entirely against the run of play on the stroke of the interval when Giorgos Karagounis popped up with a low strike following a mistake from Aleksandr Anyukov.

Russia continued to dominate possession in the second period, but Greece might have been awarded a penalty when Karagounis was felled in the box on the hour mark. However, the referee awarded the skipper a yellow card for diving.

Russia's best chance to level it came late on when Arshavin found Dzagoev, however, his header just moved wide of the post when it looked to be drifting in.

Greece defended heroically in the latter stages, and they will be joined by Czech Republic in the latter stages following their 1-0 win over Poland.
