The visitors made the brighter start, with Jason Cummings forcing a save inside the opening minute after a quick run at goal, before Liam Craig tested Neil Alexander.
Although Hearts started to see more of the ball, it was Hibernian who made the most of their early pressure to open the scoring when Scott Allan crossed the ball in for Cummings, who blasted the ball in from close range and earned himself a booking with his celebration.
The hosts responded well, with Callum Paterson and Jamie Walker both coming close with marginally wide efforts before the break.
Hearts did get back on level terms though, as Adam Eckersley played a long ball forward for Walker, who rifled the ball into the top corner with a volley from outside the box. He too picked up a yellow card for celebrating.
After a quiet start to the second half, Prince Buaben had a chance to put Hearts ahead, but his powerful strike from 20 yards out was blocked.
Callum Booth tried to force a late winner for the visitors, but also saw his effort blocked, while another strike from Buaben flew high.
The result keeps Hearts 16 points clear in the league table, while Hibs remain third, just three points behind Rangers.
