Huddersfield Town boss Chris Powell alarmed by Championship financial disparity

Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell says that the Championship is becoming a two-tier league because of the financial disparity between some clubs.

Huddersfield Town manager Chris Powell has said that the Championship is becoming a split league because of the financial disparity between teams in the second tier.

Powell made the comments when he was asked about Blackburn Rovers striker Jordan Rhodes, who is due to face his former team later today despite being regularly linked with a move away from Rovers this summer.

Middlesbrough were thought to have made a £12m bid for the Scotland international, but Blackburn wouldn't budge after selling other star striker Rudy Gestede to Aston Villa and Boro have now brought in David Nugent from Leicester City instead.

"A club in our league are said to be able to spend £12m on one player while that's probably the entire wage bill for half of dozen of us," Powell told the Huddersfield Daily Examiner.

"We're definitely leaning towards a two or even three-tier Championship.

"And the rise in parachute payments for teams coming down from the Premier League will only widen the existing gaps."

Powell's men are searching for their first win of the season today after losing in both the league and Capital One Cup this past week.
