Huddersfield boss Siewert could Grant rookie striker a chance

The 21-year-old was awarded the goal against Arsenal.

Huddersfield boss Jan Siewert may turn to rookie striker Karlan Grant in a bid to halt the club's Premier League slide.

Grant, a £2million signing from Charlton last month, stepped off the bench to score his first Terriers goal in the recent home defeat to Arsenal and could make his first start on Saturday at Newcastle.

The 21-year-old has scored 14 times for Charlton this season and was credited with Huddersfield's goal against Arsenal after the club successfully appealed against the initial decision to credit it to visiting defender Sead Kolasinac.

"That has definitely given him a lift," said Siewert, who will take charge of his fourth game since replacing David Wagner.

"He directly came to me after the (Arsenal) game and said 'boss it was my goal' and I said 'I saw it.'

"Now it's proved that it was his goal, so it has given him a lift and also in training he's coming on more and more I would say.

"He's showed already why we bought him and he's really had an impact. He's come from League One and it's a big jump, but he's proved he was right to make the jump."

When asked if Grant will make his first start at St James' Park, Siewert said: "Maybe."

Grant could replace Elias Kachunga, who has been unwell this week, while Town's other strikers, Steve Mounie and Laurent Depoitre, have mustered just one goal between them this season.

The Terriers have been cast adrift at the bottom of the table after losing 12 of their last 13 league matches.

They are 14 points adrift of safety with 12 games to go, but Siewert refuses to concede they appear destined for the trapdoor.

"Who writes this?" he said. "I haven't read this to be fair. You all know it's a difficult situation, but do you like Huddersfield Town? You want us to stay in the Premier League? Then we will go for it.

"This is how I'm thinking. Of course you all have to write what you think, but I'm positive.

"I know what's happening at the moment and I know it's a difficult task for us, I'm not stupid.

"But it's like we watched Newcastle, we've analysed them, and we've got to go for points there."

Goalkeeper Jonas Lossl and defender Chris Lowe will return to contention after both missed out against Arsenal through illness.

Winger Isaac Mbenza is recovering from a torn calf muscle, while midfielder Danny Williams (knee) and Abdelhamid Sabiri (collarbone) are both edging closer to full fitness.
