Huddersfield Town earn point from trip to Middlesbrough

Ben Gibson cancels out James Vaughan's opener in a 1-1 draw between Middlesbrough and Huddersfield Town.

A late equaliser from Ben Gibson has earned Middlesbrough a 1-1 draw against Huddersfield Town.

The best chance of the first half fell to Mustapha Carayol, who controlled the ball inside the box before drilling his shot straight at Alex Smithies in the Huddersfield goal.

Adam Hammill was making his 150th career start and he was close to opening the scoring against his former club with a powerful strike that struck the crossbar.

Smithies was the man responsible for keeping the match goalless just before the break when he once again denied Carayol, before reacting quickly to block two efforts from Kei Kamara.

Middlesbrough took control of the game after the break and were unlucky not to be ahead when Grant Leadbitter's low strike was pushed away by Smithies.

However, it was the visitors who broke the deadlock in the 58th minute when James Vaughan managed to get a touch on Oscar Gobern's strike to score his 11th of the season.

Kamara should have equalised for the home side just a few minutes later but he managed to head wide from close range.

Middlesbrough managed to find an equaliser in the 79th minute when Ben Gibson jumped highest from a corner to head home from Leadbitter's corner.

Andy Halliday should have snatched a victory for the hosts in the closing stages but he headed against the post and both sides were forced to settle for a point.
