Huddersfield Town seal late win at Wigan Athletic

A late Conor Coady goal gives Huddersfield Town a 1-0 win away at Wigan Athletic in this afternoon's Championship clash at the DW Stadium.

A late Conor Coady goal has given Huddersfield Town a 1-0 win away at Wigan Athletic in this afternoon's Championship clash at the DW Stadium.

The game began at a fast pace, with the visitors forcing a corner in the first two minutes and James McClean volleying over at the other end moments later.

In the ninth minute, the Terriers worked a clever free kick to create space for Nakhi Wells, but the former Bradford City man also fired over.

There was controversy just two minutes later as Wigan felt they should have been given a penalty when Leon Barnett appeared to have been brought down in the box, but the referee waved away the appeals.

Just after the quarter-hour mark, Huddersfield goalkeeper Alex Smithies saved Chris McCann's 20-yard effort after Tommy Smith blocked McClean's initial strike in the area.

In the latter stages of the first half, the hosts had to clear two efforts off the line in relatively quick succession, from Wells and Mark Hudson.

Just before the hour mark, Callum McManaman's cross into the Terriers area fell to McClean, but the subsequent header at full stretch flew over.

A lively spell from Huddersfield followed, with Wells and James Vaughan missing the target in quick succession from good chances.

Indeed, the visitors went on to take the lead in the 82nd minute when Coady hit a cross-cum-shot that floated into the goal from out wide.

Wigan were unable to muster up a late equaliser, leaving Huddersfield to take all three points back to West Yorkshire.
