Inter Milan boss Roberto Mancini rejects reports of rift with Mauro Icardi

Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini plays down suggestions of a falling-out with striker Mauro Icardi after the striker was left on the bench for the game against Roma.

Inter Milan manager Roberto Mancini has played down suggestions of a falling-out with striker Mauro Icardi.

The 22-year-old started Inter's recent win over Roma on the bench, and some reports claimed that Mancini made the decision due to Icardi voicing his frustration over a lack of service on the field.

"People shouldn't read too much into the fact that he was on the bench against Roma," Mancini told reporters. "At Milan, they have Luiz Adriano on the bench, Juve sometimes have (Paulo) Dybala or (Alvaro) Morata on the bench.

"These are just choices that every coach has to make and I made the best decision for the team. However, he recently scored against Bologna and doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. We know that sooner or later he will start to score goals which is important because we need that."

He later added: "I haven't yet decided whether or not he will play against Torino. I'll see how training goes and decide later."

Icardi has scored 39 goals in 80 appearances for Inter, and has so far scored on three occasions in the league this season.
