Giorgio Chiellini will miss Italy's quarter-final match as it has been confirmed that he suffered a thigh strain during his country's 2-0 over Croatia.

Italy defender Giorgio Chiellini will miss Italy's quarter-final meeting with England on Sunday, with further concern that he may not feature again in Euro 2012.

The Juventus centre-half limped off to be replaced by Andrea Barzagli as Italy secured passage to the last eight with a 2-0 win over Croatia.

Initial fears were that he had suffered a thigh strain in his left leg and those fears have been confirmed by tests conducted today.

"Unfortunately they confirmed the feelings from yesterday," chief medic Enrico Castellacci explained to reporters today.

"It is clear that he will be unavailable for the game but we will try and get him fit for the rest of the tournament if we progress further.

"It is hard to forecast his recovery, we will see. It is clear though, we are in no hurry with his recovery, the player must return well."

Chiellini may well miss the remainder of the tournament as the usual recovery time for this type of injury is around 20 days.
