Morata found Juan Cuadrado in a good position before half time, but the Colombian's effort sliced wide.
The hosts were finally rewarded for their dominance on 41 minutes as Andrea Barzagli found Morata with an inviting cross, before the former Real Madrid striker headed past Rico.
