How the Serie A Golden Boot race is shaping up

Ahead of Serie A's return this weekend, Sports Mole looks at how the Golden Boot race is shaping up, with Cristiano Ronaldo trailing Ciro Immobile.

Serie A action resumes this weekend following a 15-week absence owing to the coronavirus pandemic.

A number of issues are still to be resolved in the Italian top flight, not least at the top, where Juventus and Lazio are separated by just one point.

On an individual level, meanwhile, the battle to be crowned the division's top scorer may also go down to the wire.

Here, Sports Mole takes an in-depth look at how the race to be crowned Capocannoniere is shaping up with most sides having 12 games to play.

Lazio striker Ciro Immobile currently leads the way at the top of the scoring charts with 27 goals in 26 appearances.

That gives him an impressive return rate of one goal every 81 minutes - no wonder clubs across Europe are reportedly eager to snap him up this summer.

Immobile reached his tally of 27 goals in record-equalling time, though he fired a blank against Bologna in his most recent outing.

Cristiano Ronaldo certainly has plenty of work to do if he is to catch up with the Italian, having netted a respectable 21 league goals in his second campaign with Juventus.

The five-time Ballon d'Or winner equalled a Serie A goals record of his own earlier in the campaign by netting in 11 successive matches.

Next on the list is Romelu Lukaku, who can be more than happy with his debut season at Inter Milan after bagging 17 goals so far, one more than Cagliari's Joao Pedro.

Atalanta BC pair Josip Ilicic and Luis Muriel have 15 and 13 goals respectively, meanwhile, placing them fifth and seventh respectively, either side of 13-goal Sassuolo ace Francesco Caputo.

It has also been another decent campaign in front of goal for Edin Dzeko, with the Roma striker finding the back of the net on 12 occasions.

The top 11 is completed by Duvan Zapata, Lautaro Martinez and Andrea Petagna, who have each scored 11 times.
