Juventus too good for spirited Empoli

Italian champions Juventus recover from conceding an early goal to earn a 3-1 win over Empoli at the Stadio Carlo Castellani.

Juventus have come from behind to claim a 3-1 victory over Empoli in their Serie A match at the Stadio Carlo Castellani this afternoon.

Mario Mandzukic came close to giving the visitors the lead when he arrived to meet Juan Cuadrado's cross at the back post, but he could only turn the ball wide of the target.

Within minutes Empoli took the lead as Massimo Maccarone collected the ball just outside the box, and was allowed space to turn before drilling a low strike past Gianluigi Buffon and into the bottom corner.

However, Juventus were not behind for long, as the hosts failed to deal with Sami Khedira's ball into the box, allowing Mandzukic to slide in and finish from close range.

It got even better for the Old Lady six minutes later when Patrice Evra rose to meet Cuadrado's corner, before powering in a header to give his side the lead.

Empoli came out strongly at the beginning of the second half, and Riccardo Saponara had an effort denied by Buffon, before Maccarone headed wide from a free kick.

Despite their best efforts, the hosts were unable to find an equaliser, and their opponents made sure of the points with a third goal in the closing stages, as Paulo Dybala slotted in from close range, after Stephan Lichtsteiner and Mandzukic had been denied.
