Late Lazio comeback denies Catania

Lazio score twice in the closing stages to edge Catania 2-1 in a crucial clash in the race for European football.

Lazio scored twice in the last 12 minutes this afternoon to snatch victory from the jaws of defeat against Catania.

The home side dominated an entertaining first 45 minutes but were guilty of wasteful finishing as Louis Saha managed to miss from close range.

Lorik Cana smashed the crossbar straight just before the break as frustration grew around the Olimpico.

Catania stunned Lazio after the interval when an attempted clearance deflected off Mariano Izco and past Federico Marchetti for the opening goal.

Libok Kozak and Hernanes mounted an instant response but continued a trend of missing chances by both failing to hit the target.

With just over 10 minutes left Lazio finally equalised with a touch of fortune. Kozak's shot looked to be going wide but took a deflection off Nicola Legrottaglie and found the back of the net.

Just two minutes later a stunning turnaround was complete after Lazio were awarded a penalty following Giuseppe Bellusci's tussle with Ederson.

Antonio Candreva made no mistake from the spot to keep Lazio's Champions League chase alive with a crucial victory.
