Sheffield United will square off against Wrexham in what is the pick of the ties in the EFL Cup first round, which was drawn on Thursday.

Sheffield United will play host to Wrexham in what is undoubtedly the pick of the ties in the first round of the EFL Cup.

The Blades are back competing at this stage of the competition having been relegated from the Premier League, while Wrexham are preparing for a campaign in League One after promotion.

These teams are no strangers to each other having met in two epic FA Cup ties at the start of 2023, then-National League side Wrexham going agonisingly close to defeating Sheffield United in the initial tie, eventually drawing 3-3, before going down 3-1 at Bramall Lane.

Leeds United and Middlesbrough will square off at Elland Road in another standout tie, as will Hull City and Sheffield Wednesday at the MKM Stadium.

Another all-Championship encounter sees Preston North End play Sunderland, while Coventry City will make the trip to Ashton Gate to play Bristol City.

Chesterfield and Bromley - who have been promoted from the non-league pyramid - face Derby County and AFC Wimbledon respectively.

Each of the 35 matches will be played on the week commencing August 12.
