Steve Evans: 'No contact made with Massimo Cellino while Uwe Rosler in charge'

Leeds United manager Steve Evans is forced to deny reports that he was in regular contact with chairman Massimo Cellino while Uwe Rosler was still in charge.

Steve Evans has denied suggestions that that he was in contact with Leeds United chairman Massimo Cellino while Uwe Rosler was still in charge of the club.

The former Rotherham United boss was appointed as head coach at Elland Road on the same day that Rosler was officially dismissed.

Despite reports to the contrary, Evans insists that he was only approached by Cellino on Saturday evening when it became clear that the position had become vacant.

Asked if he had emailed the United chief in the past, as claimed in some quarters, the Scotsman is quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post as saying: "I have seen all those reports and I only want to answer this once and once only and then let's let it dry - I have never emailed Massimo Cellino in my life.

"So let's finish that. The other point of view in terms of when I was in contact with Mr Cellino was late on Saturday evening when he spoke to me and asked me if I could attend a meeting on Sunday.

"I'll finish on this point and totally finish on the subject - my first question to the owner on Sunday was 'have you a head coach in place? when I met him. He said no. The meeting started."

Evans, who picked up a point at Fulham in his first game in charge, takes his side to Bolton Wanderers on Saturday afternoon.
