Bournemouth slump to Leeds United defeat

Luke Murphy scores the only goal of the match as Championship leaders Bournemouth fall to a 1-0 defeat against Leeds United.

Leeds United have ended a seven-game winless run in the Championship by beating league leaders Bournemouth 1-0 at Elland Road this evening.

Callum Wilson came close for the visitors early on when he broke from deep inside his own half, before racing through and firing just wide.

The Cherries threatened again moments later through Brett Pitman, who was found by Marc Pugh, but could only put his effort wide of the target.

In a lively opening to the match it was Leeds who had the next chance on goal, as Rodolph Austin's header was tipped over by Artur Boruc.

Austin was proving to be a danger for the hosts and he soon dragged two further attempts wide of the post.

As the game approached the half-hour mark, Luke Murphy saw his attempt from range tipped behind by Boruc.

Leeds finally made their dominance count in the 36th minute as Murphy curled a strike from the edge of the box into the top corner.

Pitman had the ball in the net a couple of minutes later for the visitors, but his attempt was ruled out for offside.

The visitors pressed for an equaliser after the break and Wilson missed a great chance to score when he latched on to Yann Kermorgant's through-ball, but placed his effort wide.

They were in again when Sam Byram was slipped through by Lewis Cook, but he saw his effort saved by Boruc.

As the game entered the final 10 minutes Pugh thought that he had levelled for Bournemouth, only to see his strike come back off the post.

With four minutes of the match left, Bournemouth were awarded a penalty following Giuseppe Bellusci's foul inside the box on Wilson, which earned the Italian a red card.

Kermorgant stepped up to take it, but he smashed his effort against the crossbar and Leeds managed to hang on for the remaining moments to claim all three points.
