Leicetser City boss Nigel Pearson: 'Players must maintain high standards'

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson warns his players that they must perform consistently if they are to earn international call-ups.

Leicester City manager Nigel Pearson has warned his players that international call-ups will only come if they maintain the high standards that they have set so far this season.

Leonardo Ulloa and Ritchie de Laet's performances have attracted attention from the Argentina and Belgium set-ups respectively, while Jamie Vardy has been tipped to earn a place in the England squad after an impressive display against Manchester United.

England assistant coach Ray Lewington reportedly watched Vardy in Leicester's defeat at Crystal Palace on Saturday, but Pearson wants his players to focus on performing consistently before thinking about international recognition.

"What the players understand here is they have to get their performances right domestically week in and week out," he told the Leicester Mercury.

"If that generates interest then well and good. Players are clear in their own minds they need to perform for us first and foremost.

"If that brings recognition elsewhere then I am pleased for them."

Leicester host Burnley on Saturday.
