Kevin Phillips to receive Sir Tom Finney Football League award

Leicester City coach and former journeyman striker Kevin Phillips will be honoured with the Sir Tom Finney award at the end-of-season Football League Awards.

Former striker Kevin Phillips will be presented with the Sir Tom Finney award at tonight's end-of-season Football League Awards.

The 41-year-old, who is currently assistant first-team coach at Leicester City, retired at the end of last season after helping the Foxes win promotion to the Premier League from the Championship - his fifth promotion from the second tier.

The award is given to a player who has had an outstanding career in the Football League's competitions. Last year it was won by Bournemouth stalwart Steve Fletcher.

Phillips told the Football League's website: "I'd like to thank the Football League, which has given me so many fantastic memories during my 20 years as a professional footballer.

"It's all I ever wanted to be, I devoted my life to it and the game has given me so much in return.

"It's a bit more special that the award is now so closely associated to Sir Tom Finney – one of the greatest players, gentlemen and role models English football has ever seen. If my career can help inspire a fraction of the people Sir Tom's did, I'll count it among my finest achievements."

Phillips also played for Watford, Sunderland, Southampton, Aston Villa, West Bromwich Albion, Birmingham City, Blackpool and Crystal Palace during a career in which he amassed 272 goals in 660 senior appearances.

The Championship Player of the Year will also be announced this evening. Here, Sports Mole assess the three contenders.
