Former Liverpool striker John Aldridge has called on the Reds to break their transfer record in the close-season to replace Steven Gerrard.
The talismanic midfielder will call time on his legendary spell at Anfield in the coming weeks as he prepares to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy.
Aldridge told the Liverpool Echo: "[Liverpool] should have been saving up a piggy bank for the day Stevie goes to go out and break their transfer record of £35m to bring in a replacement of some sort.
"There's an extra £40m with television rights and for me that has to go on the pitch. We need a top striker – maybe two – and probably a top midfielder."
Aldridge played 104 times for Liverpool between 1987 and 1989, scoring 63 goals.
