Andre Villas-Boas insists that Charlie Adam should apologise to Gareth Bale for his challenge that left the Welshman fighting to be fit for the start of the season.

Tottenham Hotspur boss Andre Villas-Boas has slammed Charlie Adam after his tackle left Gareth Bale a major fitness doubt ahead of the new season.

Bale was forced off in Spurs' 0-0 pre-season friendly draw with Liverpool in Baltimore after Adam caught him with a late, heavy challenge.

Adam has previously injured Bale in a tackle, sidelining the Welshman for three months with knee ligament damage following an incident in May 2011.

Villas-Boas has revealed that Adam said sorry to him after the match but has demanded that the Scot apologise to Bale himself.

"At half time Charlie came to me and said something about the challenge. I can accept that but I think he should go to the player to say sorry."

Spurs are waiting to hear the extent of the injury to Bale, who has branded Adam a "coward".
